at the Clear Channel Radio Studios to learn what it takes to work in radio. While there, she even got to go on air during one of their most popular programs.
MyPathCareers.org is an innovative career exploration Web site aimed at young people who are looking at their career choices. It was a project created by the Oregon Workforce Investment Board's Communication Committee and launched in 2010. It was a-first-of-its-kind Oregon website when launched, an edgy site where teen and 20-something Oregonians could explore careers, connect to education and training, and learn about job opportunities. The site is robust, and loaded with information about how to get started.
The site was promoted during its first year by a series of events attracting youth, like the Northwest Youth Career Expo, Rose Festival, Dew tour, and the Trailblazers Street Jam. Looking to revitalize traffic to the site, the OWIB Communication Committee authorized funds to promote the site on the radio in the Portland Market. The department's Communication Section took the lead, and after pouring over proposals from Portland media vendors, selected an endorsement approach where a popular DJ from Wild 107.5 FM would talk up the site.
As part of the promotion, Wild 107.5 held a call-in contest to select a winner to Job Shadow their DJ, G-OFF (Geoff in real life) for a day. That's where Melissa comes in.
During her tour, she got to hang out with G-OFF and learn what he did to become a DJ in a major radio market. She met all the people behind the scenes too - like the engineers, traffic department (program and commercial scheduling), sales, Web content crew, news, and promotions.
