Initial claims for unemployment insurance benefits dropped by 516 for the week ending May 8, 2010 compared to the previous week. In all, the total number of individuals on unemployment benefit programs fell by more than 7,000 over the same period.

The total number of dollars paid out dropped to its lowest amount in almost six months.  The benefit payments of $59,680,967, was the lowest dollar amount since the week ending November 28, 2009.  Of the benefit payments made, about 46% come from Oregon's unemployment insurance trust fund.  Funds for EUC, EB, and the Federal Additional Benefits ($25/week) are paid by the Federal government.

The combination of fewer claims and an increase in collection of employer taxes allowed the unemployment insurance trust fund to increase by more than $190 million.  At the first of the year, employer tax rates were adjusted to help replenish the trust fund.  Prior to the current recession, Oregon's unemployment insurance trust fund topped $2.1 billion.  Despite the tremendous strain of the past two years, Oregon's trust fund remains one of the healthiest in the nation.

Retail sales positions top the latest list of job openings through the department's iMatchSkills program.  Next in line include openings for registered nurses, customer service representatives, and nursing aides, orderlies, and attendants.  As of May 12, 2010, the Oregon Employment Department posted 6,568 job listings representing 16,403 job openings.  All job openings may be viewed online at www.WorkingInOregon.org, click on “Browse Jobs" on the right-hand menu.
